Openness in Temporary Workforce Management19th, Dec 2019

"A new NPR/Marist poll finds that 1 in 5 jobs in America is held by a worker under contract. Within a decade, contractors and freelancers could make up half of the American workforce."

There are several reviews and reports where it's being predicted the picture of the next decade workforce. More and more experienced professionals starting their boutique firm in niche skills and upcoming technologies like AI, blockchain, Cloud. These individuals or teams are more agile, nimble in working with new technologies, and open for changes and possibilities. More and more companies today do staffing services along with their unique service offering.

Even with college graduates and freshers, more and more people gearing towards finding short term assignments before really getting settled on anything which excites them. More independence and flexibility are among topmost the expectation for the young workforce.

Arun Sundararajan, a management professor at New York University and author of The Sharing Economy, says "this is the work arrangement for the future." The new normal will be freelance work.

Nobody rules out of the importance of full-time staff. Companies will still be heavily relied on their full-time staff to manage the operation and to design and offer unique services and products. Temporary resources are required to fill the short term spike in the capacity required to meet projects and operational requirements. There will be always some traffic of people moving in and out of this full-time resource pool to a temporary resource pool and another way.

How can companies build agility in hiring contract resources as well as manage contracts effectively?

Managers and Product owners in companies have become more and more involved in sourcing skilled temporary resources. Finding the right skills and expertise is more important than cultural fit. The resources are identified based on their experience from similar industries, from referrals, skills, more importantly their Location and availability. These managers should see and compare side by side availability of temporary resources with their team. They should be able to plan and make decisions about the required resources by planning temporary resources similar to their staff.

Today there are a lot of challenges to achieve something on these lines. Today companies are dependent upon their own identified staffing/service vendors. The way temporary resources are sourced and managed is still untouched for a long time. Today the only differentiator between MSP/staffing vendors is how much capacity they can manage. The VMS system they use, only look at managing contract once its in place. There is redundancy in the system and usually that is passed on to vendors. However not all overheads can be passed to vendors, few still need to be managed by companies. Additionally bypassing these fix vendors in certain cases can bring huge benefits to companies but they can’t as most of VMS systems have limitations in sourcing from multi-channels.
